This October prepare to be entertained, informed and inspired at Hungerford’s first literary festival!
The festival will launch at The Bear Hotel on October 19th, and will run until the evening of Monday 22nd, with a ‘bonus’ event at The Vineyard at Stockcross on the Wednesday.
The hugely popular sports presenter, Clare Balding, will be talking about growing-up near Newbury surrounded by animals, in what is expected to be the busiest event. Ticket-holders can also expect to be ‘laughing in the aisles’ as the poet-comedian John Hegley performs his latest work, ‘Peace, Love and Potatoes’.
Military history buffs can listen to Sinclair McKay (author of the bestselling ‘The Secret Life of Bletchley Park’) talk about the overlooked ‘Y service’ and hear David Haycock and Richard Baxell discuss The Spanish Civil War. Matthew Parris and Andrew Bryson will be revealing more stories from the ‘diplomatic bag’.
Tristan Gooley will be teaching us how to understand our beautiful landscape, and Diana Alexander will be talking about ‘The Other Mitford’. Children will be entertained by award-winning author Geraldine McCaughrean and budding poets can attend a workshop to hone their creative writing skills.
Coffee, croissants and four fiction authors, including local thriller writer Jon stock, await those attending the ‘Book Brunch’ on Sunday. Ticket-holders will also have the opportunity to attend a champagne and canapé reception at The Vineyard on Wednesday to listen to Lady Claire Macdonald and Daniel Galmiche talk about their culinary lives. All this and so much more!
Tickets will be on sale in September, available through The Hungerford Bookshop or on-line at www.hungerfordlitfest.co.uk. For a full list of events please see the website or pick-up a programme at the bookshop, or other local businesses.
Special thanks to The Bear Hotel for sponsoring the festival, North Wessex Downs AONB for sponsoring The Natural Explorer event, and to The Hungerford Town Council and Greenham Common Trust for grants.
We hope this to be the first of many – spread the word!
